Grid-Tied; Off-Grid; Multi-mode

Grid tied:  this is the most basic, economical installation, and is currently the most popular one.  While the same type solar modules are used, the inverters may be different.  The most common central inverter is a non-battery backup one.  Depending on the central inverter chosen, it can function both with or without batteries.  Certain micro-inverters can be used that act as grid-tied, only, but can accept future battery banks as well.  Grid-tied systems are supported by the grid: when the grid goes down, the system produces no power.

Off-grid:  If saying goodbye to the electric utility company once and for all is your cup of tea, or paying 10’s of $1,000’s to have a utility line extended to the home is not a palatable option, then having one’s own independent power plant is sure to bring about that highest level of energy peace and security.  All-In-One systems are an emerging hot market, where equipment is more streamlined, more visually appealing than ever while utilizing less parts, thus making the switch to a grid-less system more mainstream than ever before.

Multi-mode:  A growing percentage of solar power patrons are opting to have it both ways: full grid power when the grid is up, and just enough back-up batteries to power backed-up essential loads indefinitely.  When coupled with compatible inverters, battery backup (1/3 or more of the total system price) can be added at any future date rather than making the full investment all at once.
